Will it ever be spring? I love winter, but this is getting ridiculous. We had 26 days in a row with temps below freezing. Luckily, Charlie has warmed us this winter with constant humor. Some highlights of the past few weeks:
1) Charlie is as manly as ever--he's fascinated by cars, balls, and loud noises. But he finally loves books and frequently brings one over before backing into our laps so we can read together.
2) Charlie definitely has a "naughty" streak. He loves playing tricks on us and likes to test his boundaries.
3) We took Charlie to the Orchid Show and I bid (unsuccessfully) on a vintage Orchid painting. He seemed to like it--especially getting to ride in the backpack.
4) Charlie has started hating his highchair (along with anything else that he deems retraining) so we got a booster seat for the big table and now he loves eating dinner with us. Charlie is so consistent--he doesn't like anything baby-like and wants to desperately to be a big boy. He also loves using silverware and trying to drink from the same cups we use.
5) Charlie is getting so good at communicating. He knows a lot of words and gestures and can tell us what he wants. For example, this morning he took me by the hand and led me to the fridge. I opened it and he reached for a yogurt, then rubbed his chest to say "please" (see #4). He pointed to the cabinet with the spoons, then walked over to his booster seat and said "up". So grown up!
6) The daycare teachers have been teaching Charlie sign language. Sadly, they didn't tell us about this until after we spent a couple evenings looking blankly at Charlie while he desperately signed "please" and "more". I was actually getting worried he had autism because of the repetitive movements!
7) I've been feeling frustrated by Charlie's roughness (he even got a note from daycare saying he's been pushing the other kids) so I was very pleased by his gentleness towards Evie, Maureen's tiny little lady, on Friday when we visited them in Chicago. He'd run at her, but slow down when he got near to give her a careful hug. Evie is so adorable; I don't think she realizes how tiny she is. She chirped happily at Charlie and wasn't afraid of his swinging arms or stomping.
That's our little 14-month-old in a nutshell. Keep your fingers crossed for warmer weather!

I don't know if you are aware of this but Patty has a half sister, Sarah, who is just 6 months older than Lena. She has a daughter, Tabitha, who was born 8/20/07. We visited them yesterday and Patty commented, "It's cute the way Tabs brings you a book, then turns around and backs into your lap"...Just like your point #1 on Charlie. Can't wait to meet him...remember when you said you might visit us one day?

Yeah Charlie, Finally s book man. I did not understand how he could not be one considering Billy is his dad, plus every shower I went to 1/3rd of the baby gifts were books!
You are smart to let him do as many "grown-up" things he wants to and not fight about such details. A booster seat at the grown up table fits the bill, and more importantly, I know you are feeding him very healthy "grown-up" food.
Now I can't decide if Billy looks more like Jake Gyllenhal or Demetri Martin!
